Learning Japanese

So I’ve decided to learn Japanese. Not the most difficult language to learn, I’m sure, but I’m a native English speaker, so it’s clearly not going to be easy learning a language where even the alphabet is entirely new (actually, there IS no alphabet in Nihongo (Nihongo

компютри is Japanese for ‘Japanese’ - see, you’ve learned something already!). More on the ‘no alphabet’ business later.

I’ve been checking out the language for a few weeks, and I’m definitely going to go for it. I tried signing up for a local language class, but it was cancelled due to lack of students, so I’m going solo. Hopefully you’ll join me on my adventures in self-study Nihongo…

I plan on posting my thoughts on the Japanese language, language learning, general thoughts on linguistics, as well as comments on Japanese culture as I find them out. Links, books, videos, etc., will all be mentioned. Hopefully I can gather an audience that will be able to participate in this process.

Where’s the party? I’ll have to get some expats to check out this site when I return to Tokyo. Gotta get some traffic here. Look forward to seeing some further entries.
